Text and pictures Erik K Abrahamsen

Freetown Christiania is situated between Prinsessegade, Refshalevej and Bådmandsstræde in the quarter Christianshavn.

Christianshavn was build in 1620 by King Christian 4. as a fortress and a city to protect Copenhagen, Copenhagen Royal Castle and the Royal Navy from enemy invation and attack from the island af Amager.

Christianshavn was build in the water between Amager and Zealand with a straight canal with store houses, a square  in center and 3- 5 bastions with ramparts and moats.

From 1661 to 1690 Christianshavn extended with 12 bastions, gunpowder magazines and a new area for the Royal Navy later called Holmen.

Today Freetown Christiania is a 84 acres area between Bådsmandsstræde and Royal Navy Base  Copenhagen, Holmen with 5 bastions, 4 powder magazines from 1680-90 and the area Dyssen (The Dolmer).

Christiania was founded on the ruins of old military baracks, Bådmandsstrædes Kaserne which closed down in 1969.  In september 1971 all the area and buildings was occupied of people without homes. Within months they created a fellowship with this constitution, dated 13.11.1971:

– The objective of Christiania is to create a self-govering society in which each and every individusl holds themselves responsible for the well-being of the entire community.

This society is to pay for itself, financially, and the goal of these common endeavours is to show at all times that the mental and physical pollution can be averted.
